Meem & 3ayn Family
This tee is a tribute to Kiefy's family—the Queer SWANA community!
In Arabic, the LGBTQ+ community is often referred to as the Meem (م) and 3ayn (ع) community, named after the first letters of many identity terms used across queer Arabic-speaking circles.
The diagram on the front of the shirt maps out some of the most prominent contemporary terms in our community: Gay → Mithli (مثلي) Lesbian → Mithliya (مثليّة) Bisexual → Mizdowij (مزدوج) / Mizdowija (مزدوجة) Transmasc → 3abir (عابر) Transfemme → 3abirah (عابرة)
On the back, the word Queer appears phonetically in Arabic (كوير / Kweer) enclosed by (ع) عائلة ال (م) loosely translating to 'Family of (Meem) + (3ayn)' atop an excerpt from the Shahnameh—the epic Persian poem completed in 1010 CE, often quoted in protest spaces as a symbol of resilience and cultural pride.
